Trial of former Suriname dictator begins

The long-awaited trial of a former South American dictator accused of a 1982 massacre began Friday with testimony from a member of the firing squad.Onno Flohr, considered one of the prosecutor's main witnesses, testified that the former ruler, Desi Bouterse, was present during the executions but did not kill anyone. Flohr killed three of the 15 men, according to his testimony.'We were ordered to fire, and we were told that whoever refused to fire would die,' Flohr said, adding that he received orders from a military official who has since died.... read more
